Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.

The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.

Police then located numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Officials report initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

Local authorities said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for tips.

A high-ranking official said the incident left him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in February 2020.
