Resurgent Medvedev Claims Maiden Trophy in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been won on hard courts
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his initial championship for 882 days with a win over opponent Moutet in the tournament final.
The Russian, a ex- number one, has experienced a challenging period, winning just one match at the big events and undergoing a setback at the New York tournament.
His varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serving in particular - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and ultimately separating with long-time coach his previous coach.
Currently collaborating with his coach and his other coach, the tennis star has gradually advanced in the last few weeks - climaxing in a closely contested three-set triumph over challenger Corentin Moutet.
This represents the player's maiden title following the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hardcourt since spring of 2023.
Victory also means the Russian has won twenty-one championships at twenty-one different competitions.
"It's the first time I am participating in a tournament with my children at once, so to secure a trophy is really nice," commented world number 14 Medvedev.
"This title is in dedication of my second daughter my daughter, because the maiden victory I got when my first daughter her name was born was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, including in that event earlier this year.
Medvedev's defensive approach and regular reactions on court had led commentators to doubt if his skill to perform at the top level was over.
Yet the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, striving to advance forward and perform assertively, reinforced by an improved service.
The champion fought back from a deficit in the initial set against the challenging opponent, taking four of the final five points to take the lead.
The competitors swapped break points in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his first tour victory, seized the initiative to push for a decider.
He rescued 4 initial chances in a competitive deciding set before the Russian broke to 15 to close out the victory.
Fittingly, the winner earned victory with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman incapable to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
