European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
